What is your position with Ellipsis?
I’m a youth care worker at Ellipsis.
How long have you worked here?
I’ve worked for Ellipsis for about four years, some of which was for Youth Emergency Services & Shelter before it merged with Youth Homes of Mid-America to create Ellipsis.
Have you had any other roles/jobs during your tenure with Ellipsis?
I've been a youth care worker throughout the years, and I float around the shelter to all units to make sure everything is staying afloat.
Can you recall a moment (during your career with Ellipsis) when you felt like you were in exactly the right place, doing exactly what you should be doing? What was that like?
There have been many moments throughout the years that reaffirm my choice to work in this industry and at Ellipsis. Moments that make it feel like I am in the right career path often consist of times when I see a kid who was previously discharged from Ellipsis thriving in the community.
What are some of the more challenging aspects of this job?
A challenging part of working in this field is probably when I walk into work and don’t really know what the day may hold and how we can best help the kids and families. Youth care workers wear a lot of hats.
What are some of the rewarding aspects of the job?
A hugely rewarding aspect is when we can build rapport with the kids and relate in ways that really click and help them feel supported and inspired to work toward their goals.
Why is it important to have residential programs in communities and qualified people working in them?
Residential programs are important because they provide structure and supportive environments for kids who may not have either of those things.
What is a misconception people may have about mental health treatment? How do you dispel that?
Everyone can experience mental health problems in their life, just like anyone can and likely will experience physical health complications. There is no shame in seeking help.
If there’s anything else you’d like to add, please feel free to do so!
I love working at Ellipsis!
