Reminders of America’s workforce shortage seem to blast from every screen, radio and billboard imaginable. For Ellipsis, a worker shortage not only means a strain on current employees, but it chips away at the breadth of services and programs available to central Iowa kids and families who need them most.

“Now more than ever before, we have a high demand for our services, everything from crisis and immediate support to our residential programs. It takes a special person to work with our kids and families. There has to be a connection to the type of work we do here.”

Chris Koepplin, Ellipsis Chief Executive Officer.

This “type of work” is truly life changing. Ellipsis youth care worker Maggie Tierney-Ingram described it as a career where she knew she could make a profound impact in the lives of youth.

“When I interviewed at Ellipsis, I met people who were passionate and driven to provide a bigger and better life for at-risk youth in the community by equipping them with skills to be successful in their adult life,” Tierney-Ingram said. “I wanted to do the same with my career. I felt Ellipsis provided many care options for their youth, meeting them at different levels for that period in their lives, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it!”

For a number of open positions, Ellipsis is looking for candidates who have at least a high school diploma (college degree preferred) and basic experience working with kids, teens or families. Chris Koepplin said they are willing to train people who are ready to make a difference in the lives of youth. She said they are also open to students who are looking for an internship in the area of health and human services.

“Our employees will often say Ellipsis is not like other shelter or agency programs — and that’s a good thing,” Chris said. “Although the job can be demanding, we work hard to put priority on work-life balance, self-care and building a team that is really more like a family. We put kids and families first, and our staff are a close second. Our staff are very important to us.”
